Clothing
Men
Men wear a dishdasha, which is long-sleeved and floor length. Light materials in white or ivory are typically worn in the summer. Heavier choices are gray, beige or blue and are common in the winter. Long or short white pants are worn under dishdasha. The headdress for males consists of three parts. The first part gahfiya, is a tight fitting knit white cap, which prevents the gutra (main cloth) from slipping. It is a square piece of cloth that if folded in a triangle and hongs down over the shoulders. It is then held in place by an ogal, a double circlet of twisted black cord.

Women
There is much more variety for women. They usually wear long-sleeved, loose, floor length dress called a daraa. For daily outings the abaya is popular; it is a silky head to toe black cloak the cover the daraa. Many different styles and colours of headscarves, called hejab are worn by many Muslim women. Some wear a burqa, which is a short black veil that covers the face except for the eyes and forehead. Some also wear a bushiya, which is a semi- transparent veil that covers the entire face. |
