In 1710 some members from the Arab Anaza Tribal Confederation settled on the shore of Kuwait bay. They started building on that land and it later became Kuwait. Between 1756 and 1762, the group elected the head of the Al-Sabah family to rule them. Kuwait started drilling oil in 1934 and became a major petroleum exporter. Kuwait became wealthy because of oil sales. In 1986 Iran began attack on Kuwait for supporting Iraq. Kuwait asked the Soviet Union and the United States to help provide safety for its shipping. In 1990 Saddam Hussein accused Kuwait of violating oil production limits and claimed that Kuwait was apart of Iraq. The United States and other nations formed a coalition with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The allied forces moved into Kuwait and got Iraqi forces out.
